Learning

Interactive modules from the RiSE Lab for hands-on radar remote sensing. Each one pairs the underlying theory with something you can steer yourself — on real satellite data where possible.

Modules

SAR

SAR Geometry

Look angle, incidence, slant vs ground range, foreshortening, layover and shadow, and ellipsoid geocoding — four exercises, two on real Umbra scenes and two on the equations.

MODE

SAR Acquisition Modes

A 3D animated explainer of stripmap, spotlight, ScanSAR, TOPS and SweepSAR — orbit the scene, watch the beam move over the ground, and see where each mode's coverage and duty cycle come from.

InSAR

Height of Ambiguity

A fringe simulator on real terrain: change the baseline, the band and the incidence angle and watch topographic fringes on Fuego respond, then see how an out-of-date DEM leaves fringes at Kirishima.

InSAR

Kirishima: when the map is older than the volcano

Lava filled the Shinmoedake crater in 2011; a DEM from 2000 still shows it empty. Predict the fringes that error leaves in an interferogram, then check against real Sentinel-1 data processed twice with ISCE2.

InSAR

Phasors in a pixel

One pixel is the sum of every echo in its resolution cell. Drag the scatterers, move one by a quarter wavelength, shift the viewpoint and let the leaves stir: see why one image's phase is random, why the difference of two is not, and where coherence comes from.
